ATHENS — Kirby Smart wasn’t ready to talk about individual team leaders at the start of fall camp, but he did share that Trevor Etienne is setting the pace in the running backs room.

“Trevor does a great job of leading that room and holding people to a standard,” Smart said, referring to the third-year transfer from Florida.

Etienne, who left the Gators after playing a back-up role to Montrell Johnson, was selected as a first-team preseason All-SEC pick at SEC Media Days in Dallas last month while Johnson was relegated to second-team.

Smart revealed on Thursday that Branson Robinson, who missed last season after undergoing surgery as a result of a knee injury suffered in the last fall camp, will begin fall drills “without limitation.”

Smart said UGA will, however, manage Robinson’s snaps as he adjusted to being back working at full speed.

It makes for a healthy running backs room that could feature as much power and explosion as the Bulldogs’ have had since the days of Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and D’Andre Swift in 2017.

“I’m excited about the room,” Smart said. “You know, Rod (Robinson) is a guy that took a ton of reps last year … he’s had a great offseason.”

The 240-pound Roderick Robinson, a sophomore, is expected to churn out tough yards between tackles while Etienne brings a true home-run threat to the backfield.

Smart referred to walk-on Cash Jones as a “veteran leader in that room,” too, and said the young players Georgia added are off to good starts.

“The young guys that are coming back that we just signed had great summers,” Smart said. “Whether that be Nate (Frazier), Dwight (Phillips Jr.) or Chauncey (Bowens).

“I think we’ve got a room of good backs that are as talented as we’ve had, but inexperienced.”
