UGA pitcher Cole Wilcox didn’t get selected in the first round of first round of this month’s MLB draft.

But the right-hander with a fastball clocked at 100 mph sure got paid as if he was drafted that high.

On Tuesday, Wilcox broke the MLB record for a signing bonus for a third-round pick by signing for $3.3 million bonus with the San Diego Padres, per multiple reports.

Earlier this month, the 6-foot-5, 230-pounder was drafted in third round at No. 80 overall. His “jackpot” of a bonus was more than four times the recommended bonus of $767,400 for the No. 80 spot, per the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Jeff Sanders.

Wilcox’s payday broke the bonus record for a third-rounder of $3 million, ironically paid by the Padres to another player from last year’s draft.

Last spring before UGA’s baseball season was canceled, Wilcox showed the scouts his all-star potential – striking out 32 batters in 23 innings with a 1.57 earned run average.

The Bulldogs had arguably the best pitching staff in the NCAA, as fellow Bulldogs pitcher Emerson Hancock was drafted No. 6 overall. Hancock signed for a $5.7 million bonus.
