ATHENS — Georgia entered the season as the No. 1 team in the country. It showed exactly why that was the case against Clemson, beating the Tigers 34-3.
The performance only further validated why Georgia was the No. 1 team in the AP Poll Top 25 rankings for Week 2. Georgia also came in at No. 1 in the Coaches Poll this week.
Georgia had 57 of the 62 first-place votes, an improvement over the 46 it had in the first edition of the poll.
Behind Georgia was Ohio State at No. 2, Texas at No. 3 and Alabama at No. 4. Notre Dame dropped to No. 5 after getting past Idaho.
Clemson meanwhile, fell from No. 14 to No. 25.
For as well as Georgia played at times against Clemson, head coach Kirby Smart knows there are areas that the Bulldogs have to be better in as the schedule gets more difficult.
“I can’t pick one thing on improvement,” Smart said. “There was so many things that we’ve got to do better. All of it. There’s just a lot there that we want to improve on. Some of what you’re doing is dictated by who you play. People just think it’s a stat game. It’s not a stat game. It’s who you’re lined up across from and how good is that football player because that does dictate things, the matchups.
Georgia had just 6 points at halftime and ran for 34 yards. The Bulldogs were also missing several players on the defensive line. We’ll see if Warren Brinson or Mykel Williams are able to return to action this week.
Georgia does face a step down in competition, as the Bulldogs take on Tennessee Tech. Saturday’s game is set for a 2 p.m. ET start, with SEC Network+ broadcasting the game.
