ATLANTA — It is a big and long weekend for the Montgomery family.
On Saturday, the family drove down from Findlay, Ohio to Athens, Ga., to visit their son Ryan.
He has just enrolled at the University of Georgia, signing with the Bulldogs as a 4-star quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class.
But Ryan is not the only reason the Montgomerys are in Georgia over the holiday weekend. Their older son Luke is playing in Monday night’s national championship game.
Luke Montgomery signed with Ohio State as a 4-star prospect in the 2023 class.
The older Montgomery is obviously very excited for both his younger brother as Ryan starts his college career, and the chance to win a national championship for his home-state program.
Luke Montgomery has seen his involvement with Ohio State grow as its playoff run has gotten deeper. He made his first career start while playing a a career-high 60 snaps at left guard in the 28-14 win over Texas.
Montgomery would’ve loved the chance to play with his younger brother at Ohio State, but the Buckeyes signed 5-star prospect Tavien St. Clair. Like Montgomery, St. Clair is also from Ohio, as he hails from Bellefontaine, Oh.
As for Ryan Montgomery’s recruitment, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina were the top contenders for the 4-star prospect. He committed to Georgia back in April and despite a late push from the Gators during the early signing period, he remained loyal to the Bulldogs.
“I’m just super proud to see him carve out his own legacy,” Luke Montgomery said of his brother. “Obviously would’ve loved to have had him here, but Georgia is getting a great player.”
Ryan Montgomery’s senior season of high school football was cut short after suffering a knee injury that included ACL, MCL and a meniscus tear. He has still enrolled early at Georgia and was present with the team prior to its game against Notre Dame.
The Buckeyes face Notre Dame in Monday’s national championship game. Ohio State is looking to win its first national championship since the 2014 season.
Luke Montgomery is obviously very proud of his young brother. In speaking with some fans, he, unprompted, raves about the kind of player his brother is going to be for the Bulldogs.
“Georgia is getting a steal,” Montgomery said.
Luke added that Ryan recently began running and hopes to be able to fully participate in spring drills for the Bulldogs. Georgia does have to replace 2024 starter Carson Beck, but the competition is expected to be between Gunner Stockton and Ryan Puglisi.
Georgia also signed 3-star quarterback Hezekiah Millender in the 2025 recruiting class and the Bulldogs are keeping an eye on the transfer portal, in the event a veteran quarterback emerges. Still, the Bulldogs are very high on Montgomery and his mental makeup.
While most Georgia fans have their eyes toward next season and making another national championship run, Ryan Montgomery is still very invested in the final game of this season.
The Montgomery family, in addition to Luke’s girlfriend who the family picked up in Columbus on Saturday, will be in attendance for Monday’s national championship game.
For Ryan, he hopes it will be the first of many games of his in the stadium, as Georgia has regularly played in the building over the years.
But he’ll mostly be there on Monday to root for his older brother and hope to see Ohio State win a national championship.
