ATHENS — The ink is just about to dry on all of the collegiate football preseason rankings providing one final look at various programs’ lofty expectations.
Georgia, of course, is No 1 on most lists as Kirby Smart begins his ninth season leading the Bulldogs.
Quarterback Carson Beck is a preseason Heisman Trophy favorite and a projected overall No. 1 draft pick, but there’s a lot more to like about Georgia than its star quarterback.
The 10,000-foot view reveals the Bulldogs are strong, deep and experienced in the trenches, perhaps boasting the finest interior offensive line on one side of the ball, with hybrid train wrecker Mykel Williams on the verge of a breakout season on defense.
Trevor Etienne has the look of being the most explosive portal transfer of the offseason, while Dominic Lovett and Dillon Bell provide Beck with capable weaponry as perimeter receiving threats.
Georgia scored high landing Stanford transfer Benjamin Yuroasek to a tight ends room that already includes established veteran Oscar Delp and a rising talent in Lawson Luckie.
The Bulldogs’ young secondary is filled with talent, led by preseason All-American Malaki Starks and returning starting corner Daylen Everette, while sophomore CJ Allen is expected to help anchor a speedy and capable linebacking corps.
Smart takes particular pride in Georgia’s special teams, which look as sturdy as any in the nation with booming punter Brett Thorson and steady placekicker Peyton Woodring.
That compilation of players is enough to put the Bulldogs atop the national poll, along with the first installment of the SEC Power Poll.
