One of Georgia’s defensive assistants is heading to the NFL to lend a helping hand to one of the league’s worst units this past season.
Jay Valai, a defensive quality-control coach for the Bulldogs who’s also been involved in recruiting recently, will assume the same position with the Kansas City Chiefs, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.
Valai also will assist the Chiefs’ defensive backs.
The Chiefs won the AFC West but their season ended in disappointing fashion, falling at home to the Tennessee Titans in the wild-card round after holding a 21-3 halftime lead. The Chiefs were outscored 19-0 in the second half in the eventual 22-21 defeat.
Kansas City has reached the postseason in three consecutive seasons but has managed only one win during that span. This year, the Chiefs ranked 28th in total defense by allowing 365.1 yards per game. The team was especially bad against the pass, ranking 29th in the NFL.
