ATHENS —There was little doubt about who the better Bulldogs were on Tuesday night, as Georgia blew out Alabama A&M 93-45 to move to 5-0 on the season.
It’s the best start to a season since Mike White took over the program. Georgia was coming off a win over Georgia Tech in its most recent game and carried that momentum into Tuesday’s game in Stegeman Coliseum. The 48-point was the largest margin of victory since White became the team’s head coach.
Silas Demary Jr. and Asa Newell once again led the way for Georgia. Demary had 15 points and 4 assists on the night. Much of his work came at the free throw line, as he hit 9 of his 11 attempts on the evening. Newell led all scorers with 17 points, chipping in 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
Newell continues to live up to the hype, as he led Georgia in scoring for the second time in five games this season.
After making just 3 3-pointers in the win over Georgia Tech, the Bulldogs came out and hit 4 of their 10 attempts in the first half. After a few off-shooting nights to start the season, the Bulldogs ended up connecting on 36 percent from beyond the arc on the night. Blue Cain and Dakota Leffew both knocked down three 3-pointers on the night. Cain and Leffew each finished with 9 points.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot 53 percent from the field on the night.
While shooting had been a worry for Georgia to start the season, the Bulldogs once again put forth a strong defensive showing. Alabama A&M shot only 30 percent on the evening. Alabama A&M also turned the ball over 21 times on the evening, as Georgia finished with 16 steals.
With the athletic edge, Georgia was able to get out and thrive in transition. Georgia finished with 26 points off turnovers and 18 fast break points on the night.
The Bulldogs also had 16 steals and 7 blocks on the evening, as their length bothered Alabama A&M all evening. Somto Cyril had 3 blocks to go along 11 points with a team-high 9 rebounds, while RJ Godfrey had 2 to go along with his 9 points and 5 rebounds.
If there was one area where Georgia could improve, it came in free throw shooting. Georgia made only 68 percent of its free throws, shooting 27 of 40 from the free-throw line.
Georgia is off to its first 5-0 start in a non-Covid season since the 2001-02 season. That is also the last season in which Georgia won an NCAA tournament game.
While the Bulldogs have gotten off to a strong start, the schedule will get much more difficult moving forward. Georgia’s next two games are against No. 15 Marquette and No. 22 St. John’s. Both of those games will be played in the Bahamas. Georgia plays Marquette on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then faces St. John’s the next day.
Georgia’s next home game is on Nov. 30 against Jacksonville.
