Summer is over for the Georgia football team, as fall camp begins on Thursday.

Prior to taking the practice field, Kirby Smart and a handful of players will speak to reporters to preview the upcoming month of practices. As Georgia likes to make practices tougher than the games, the month of August figures to be a grueling one for the Bulldogs.

Georgia brings back a number of key faces from the 2023 team, but it still enters the fall with its fair share of questions on the defensive side of the ball. Below is our first crack at a depth chart for the 2024 season.

The Bulldogs have just over four weeks before they open the 2024 season against the Clemson Tigers in Atlanta.

Georgia football defensive line depth chart

Defensive end:

  1. Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins (Jr.)/Gabe Harris (Soph.)
  2. Joseph Jonah-Ajonye (Fr.)
  3. Justin Greene (Fr.)

Nose guard:

  1. Nazir Stackhouse (Sr.)
  2. Christen Miller (R-Soph.)
  3. Jamaal Jarrett (R-Fr.)/Xzavier McLeod (R-Fr.)
  4. Nnamdi Ogboko (Fr.)

Defensive tackle:

  1. Warren Brinson (Sr.)
  2. Christen Miller (R-Soph.)/Jordan Hall (Soph.)
  3. Jordan Thomas (Fr.)/Nasir Johnson (Fr.)

Analysis: Perhaps no position group on the team will be under more scrutiny this fall than the defensive line. The standard for this group is so high, as the unit powered Georgia to championships in 2021 and 2022.

Stackhouse and Brinson help raise the floor for this group. That the two seniors elected to return to Georgia for another season was massive.

The ceiling of this unit will be based on how some of the young players develop. Gabe Harris and Christen Miller each had promising offseasons and seem primed for bigger roles.

With camp starting, injuries are already a bit of a concern. Ingram-Dawkins is still working his way back from a foot injury, while Hall will be out with a lower leg injury. His status for the opener is still in question and something head coach Kirby Smart is likely to address on Thursday

Georgia football outside linebacker depth chart

  1. Mykel Williams (Jr.)/Chaz Chambliss (Sr.)
  2. Damon Wilson (Soph.)/Samuel M’Pemba (Soph.)
  3. Quintavious Johnson (Fr.)

Analysis: Williams will be a factor on the defensive line for Georgia in 2024, but he’ll have plenty of eyes on him when he lines up at outside linebacker.

Chambliss is still going to play plenty for the Bulldogs. Wilson and M’Pemba will look to take leaps in their second seasons at Georgia.

Georgia football inside linebacker depth chart

Money position:

  1. CJ Allen (Soph.)
  2. Jalon Walker (Jr.)
  3. Kris Jones (Fr.)

Mac position:

  1. Smael Mondon (Sr.)
  2. Raylen Wilson (Soph.)
  3. Troy Bowles (R-Fr.)
  4. Justin Williams (Fr.)/Chris Cole (Fr.)

Analysis: This might be Georgia’s most talented position group, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

But there will be at least some questions to start the fall, as Mondon is making his way back from a foot injury. There is also a chance he could be suspended following his recent racing arrest.

That opens the door for Allen, Walker and Wilson to get plenty of reps. Even with a healthy and able Mondon, those three all figure to factor into the rotation at linebacker.

The three freshmen at the position — Williams, Cole and Jones — all figure to at least be key special teams players. They could also carve out specialty roles within the Georgia defense.

Georgia football defensive back depth chart

Right cornerback:

  1. Daylen Everette (Jr.)
  2. Ellis Robinson (Fr.)
  3. Chris Peal (R-Fr.)
  4. DeMello Jones (Fr.)/Ondre Evans (Fr.)

Left cornerback:

  1. Julio Humphrey (R-Soph.)/Daniel Harris (Soph.)
  2. Ellis Robinson (Fr.)

Star/nickel:

  1. Joenel Aguero (Soph.)/JaCorey Thomas (R-Soph.)
  2. Kyron Jones (R-Fr.)/ Collin Gill (R-Fr.)

Free safety:

  1. Malaki Starks (Jr.)
  2. KJ Bolden (Fr.)

Strong safety:

  1. Dan Jackson (Sr.)/Bolden
  2. Jake Pope (R-Soph.)
  3. Justyn Rhett (R-Fr.)

Analysis: There are two very different pictures of the cornerback and safety. The former figures to be about as fierce a fight for playing time as any position on the team. Everette, Humphrey, Harris and even Robinson could all start games for Georgia this season. Finding all of them playing time might be on the table for first-year cornerbacks coach Donte Williams.

Safety is a different story. Smart has already noted his concern with the group, especially following the dismissal of David Daniel-Sisavanh. A lot of eyes will be on the freshman Bolden, even more so now that him starting is a real possibility.

Starks will be asked to do a lot for this group, both in terms of leadership and on-field ability.
