The media has spoken. And it has the Florida Gators winning the SEC East this season, over the Georgia Bulldogs.
Florida got 53 first-place votes and came in first in media voting in the SEC East. Georgia received 43 first-place votes and was picked to finish second in the division. Georgia has beaten Florida in each of the past three seasons and also won the SEC East in those years.
Georgia and Florida play on Nov. 7 in Jacksonville, Fla., this season.
The Bulldogs did get more votes to win the SEC (7) than Florida did (5) but both were will behind Alabama, who got 77 votes to win the SEC. Alabama was also picked to finish first in the SEC West, with LSU coming in second.
The media also had its Preseason All-SEC teams named. Georgia had three players on the first team, with all of them coming on defense. Jordan Davis, Malik Herring and Richard LeCounte all ended up earning the nod.
Davis and LeCounte were also on the First Team for the Coaches All-SEC team.
Still, Georgia coach Kirby Smart thought that number was a little low given how good Georgia’s defense was a season ago and what the Bulldogs bring back.
“I didn’t think we had a lot of preseason hype with our defense in terms of All-SEC guys,” Smart said. “I would think that all the better defenses are somewhere else because I don’t know that we put but two guys maybe? I don’t know. Richard [LeCounte] and Jordan [Davis] were the only two I noticed on the accolades.
“For us to have all the great players, they’re certainly not getting recognized that way. They played really hard last year. I thought our defensive staff did a tremendous job putting them in good positions.”
George Pickens and Trey Hill both earned Second Team nods on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, Monty Rice and Eric Stokes were on the Second Team and punter Jake Camarada also received the honor.
Running back Zamir White was the lone Bulldog on the Third Team.
Georgia will set its season this Saturday against Arkansas. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start time and will air on the SEC Network. To see the full predicted order of finish by the media and the All-SEC teams, see below.
