ATHENS — Georgia fans who were impressed with quarterback Justin Fields might have even more respect for the true freshman once learning he played with a sprained ankle.

Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart disclosed the injury in his postgame comments following No. 3-ranked Georgia’s 45-0 win over Austin Peay.

Smart was asked by DawgNation about how his team came out of the game injuries-wise and spoke freely and in a forward manner.

“Justin had a little bit of an ankle sprain, Justin Young had a knee sprain, but Fields was able to play with his [injury],” Smart said. “[Receivers] Kearis [Jackson] and Jayson [Stanley] were kind of play if they have to, thought they could have gone. Both guys have soft tissue injuries.

“Terry [Godwin] has worked out the last two days really well, but didn’t know if he could play or not, so we held him.”

Jackson [hamstring] and Stanley [quad] practiced leading up to Saturday’s game and were game-day scratches.

Godwin, Georgia’s leading returning receiver, has been dealing with a knee injury and most recently, a calf strain. Smart had indicated earlier in the week he was doubtful Godwin would play in the opener.

The Bulldogs head coach said he’ll be counting on Jackson, Stanley and Godwin to return for next Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. game at South Carolina.

“We really need those three wideouts back, they all give us something different, especially with James [Cook] out now,” Smart said. “We’ve got to have these three fast wideouts to help us.”

Cook, who in addition to being an effective runner has proven adept at catching passes, will be suspended on account of a fourth-quarter targeting violation.

Smart said that as impressive as transfer receiver Demetris Robertson was, he still needs to get in better condition to compete at the SEC level.
