ATHENS — Georgia football coach Kirby Smart said he has no imminent plans to announce a starting quarterback, but he did reveal the current depth chart.
To no one’s surprise, sophomore Jake Fromm is working with the ones, freshman Justin Fields with the twos and freshman Matthew Downing is the No. 3.
Smart made it clear he hasn’t determined a starting quarterback for the opening game, however.
Most assume it will be Fromm and Smart won’t even bother with an announcement. After all, Fromm was the FWAA Freshman All-American quarterback last season after leading Georgia to the SEC Championship and an appearance in the CFB Playoff title game.
The No. 3-ranked Bulldogs open the season at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Sanford Stadium against FCS Austin Peay.
“I really haven’t even thought about it, to be honest with you,” Smart said. “We let those two guys compete out. Jake’s going with the ones almost the whole time. So we’ll handle it as it goes.
“It’s not like it’s a predetermined announcement on this date. It’s not really in the plans, we don’t look at it that way. We look at it at as those two guys are competing and they’ll continue to compete.”

Smart did give a direct answer when asked who the No. 3 quarterback would be.
“Probably Matthew Downing,” Smart said. “He’s taken the majority of the reps. He would be the guy right now that would go in as the three.”
Downing had 24 TD passes and five interceptions his senior season according to MaxPreps.com. He was 182-of-312 passing (58 percent) and led Alpharetta to an 11-2 record.
Another interesting tidbit Smart shared: “We run the same offense with both those guys (Fromm and Fields) right now.
Some speculated Fields might have a Wildcat package of sorts to take advantage of his running ability.

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney pointed out at the start of fall camp that the risk of injury could preclude Georgia from developing that sort of package.
The Bulldogs have only two quarterbacks on scholarship, as Downing is a walk-on from Alpharetta.
