NEW ORLEANS —Georgia senior linebacker Smael Mondon took a look around the room at Monday’s Sugar Bowl media day.
“What’s different about this team? A lot, it’s a different team every year,” Mondon said. “I guess with the TCU title game, it seemed like everyone had been to a championship game before.
“But now, with a lot of guys having transferred out and a lot of new guys coming in, it’s a lot of people’s first time in this type of game.”
To Mondon’s point, he is one of just four current players who started in the Bulldogs’ 65-7 win over the Horned Frogs in the CFP Championship Game that capped Georgia’s 15-0 season in 2022.
Tate Ratledge and Xavier Truss started on the offensive line, while Mondon and safety Malaki Starks are the remaining starters on defense.
Georgia tight end Oscar Delp didn’t start, but he was pressed into CFP action his freshman season after veteran Darnell Washington was injured in the first quarter of the Bulldogs’ 42-41 win over Ohio State.
Delp, who has four touchdown catches in the past four games entering into the 8:45 p.m. game with Notre Dame at Caesar’s Superdome, indicated UGA’s approach has remained the same.
“It’s old-school football,” Delp said. “Who’s going to hit the other guy harder.”
Delp is also on board with the notion that Gunner Stockton, who is making his first start at quarterback in the Sugar Bowl, might have some Stetson Bennett in him.
“I think they are pretty similar quarterbacks with more similarities than differences,” Delp said. “You can do a lot with Gunner like you could with Stetson.
“He can run the ball and make plays with his legs and extend plays, but we can execute anything that’s called, and that’s exciting.”
Mykel Williams, like Delp, finds himself among the veterans who can reflect on meaningful CFP playoff experience.
“This game means a lot, it’s important to me we’re victorious,” said Williams, whose 25 snaps in the CFP title game win over TCU were second only to Jalen Carter among UGA defensive linemen.
“I’m one of the leaders on this team, and I have a responsibility here. I want to win every game we play and leave a great legacy.”
