Holding an opponent to negative rushing yards in a quarter is impressive. Doing it for a half is almost unheard of in the SEC.

On Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs held Tennessee to minus-1 rushing yards in the entire game. Behind that vaunted run defense, the Bulldogs made the Volunteers one-dimensional and pulled away in the second half to win, 44-21.

Tennessee running back Eric Gray rushed for 25 yards on eight carries but thanks to sacks and negative runs from quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, who finished the night with a whopping minus-40 rushing yards, the Volunteers finished in the negatives on the ground.

The Volunteers led the Bulldogs, 21-17, at halftime, but Georgia scored 27 unanswered points in the second half. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs recorded two takeaways. Georgia forced another fumble and returned the loose ball for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Thanks to the historic day from the Georgia defense, the Bulldogs offense didn’t feel much pressure in the final 15 minutes, but the offense was far from perfect. Georgia lost a fumble because of a high snap in the end zone, which Tennessee recovered for a touchdown, and was stopped on fourth-and-inches from the goal line just before halftime. Giving away those points and leaving other points on the field will not be a recipe for success next week at Alabama.

On Facebook, DawgNation shared the same sentiment. While the fans in the Facebook group loved the dominant defensive performance, there were plenty of fans concerned that the Bulldogs must be much better to win next week.
