NEW ORLEANS — The Georgia-Notre Dame game has been postponed for 24 hours, the Sugar Bowl announced.

The city of New Orleans held a press conference at 1 p.m. CT on Wednesday. The Sugar Bowl director Jeff Hundley said the Sugar Bowl is expected to now be played Thursday night, as he says it will be postponed 24 hours, meaning the game would start at 8:45 p.m. ET. Hundley announced more information would come in the coming hours.

The postponement comes after investigators said a driver intentionally drove around police barricades and struck and killed several people early Wednesday in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Georgia and Notre Dame were originally set to play on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. ET on ABC. The two teams arrived in New Orleans on Sunday. The attack occurred blocks away from the Georgia team hotel.

The Georgia Athletic Association released a statement noting that everyone in the team’s traveling party has been accounted for.

“We are deeply saddened by the senseless violence that occurred in New Orleans,” the statement reads. “All team personnel and members of the official team travel party have been accounted for. Currently, we are in contact with local law enforcement as well as representatives from the Sugar Bowl and College Football Playoff and are continuing to gather more information. Our prayers are with all those who traveled here for the Sugar Bowl and entire New Orleans community.”

University of Georgia president Jere Morehead confirmed via statement that a UGA student was critically injured. The student had not been identified as of mid-day Wednesday.

The Caesars Superdome, the sight of Wednesday’s game between Georgia and Notre Dame, was on lockdown Wednesday morning as security sweeps were conducted. The venue is roughly 20 blocks from where the attack took place.

The winner of the Sugar Bowl is set to take on Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 9. There has been nothing said as to how that game might be impacted following this postponement.
