ATHENS — Georgia football will play Ohio State in a home-and-home series in 2030 and 2031, per a UGA release.
The Buckeyes are scheduled to play in Athens at Sanford Stadium on Sept. 14, 2030, with the Bulldogs making the return trip to Columbus to play on Aug. 30, 2031.
Georgia already has significant non-conference games scheduled in both of those seasons. UGA is set to play Clemson in Athens on Aug. 31, 2030, and Oklahoma in Athens in 2031.
This time, Ohio State is expected to go through with the scheduled games. The Buckeyes canceled a home-and-home agreement with Georgia in 2012 that was set for 2020 and 2021 because of a Big Ten/Pac-12 partnership, per ESPN. Ohio State is instead playing Oregon in 2020 and 2021.
The Bulldogs and Buckeyes have met only once before, with Georgia beating Ohio State in the 1993 Citrus Bowl, 21-14, in Orlando, Fla.
It’s possible the Bulldogs could meet the Buckeyes sooner than their scheduled home and home, perhaps even this season if both programs win the remainder of their scheduled games.
The Buckeyes were No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday night, and Georgia came in at No. 6.
The Bulldogs and Ohio State both control their own destiny, assured CFP berths if they win out and win their respective conference championship games in December.
This year’s College Football Playoff semifinal games are in Atlanta (Chick-fil-A-Peach Bowl, Dec. 28) and Glendale, Ariz., (Playstation Fiesta Bowl, Dec. 28). The CFP Championship Game is Jan. 13, in New Orleans.
The Bulldogs still have schedule openings in 2023 and 2025, the next potential landing spots for home-and-home series.
As things stand, Bulldogs’ fans won’t see a non-conference Power 5 team other than Georgia Tech in Athens again until 2026, when UCLA plays a return game.
Kirby Smart and AD Greg McGarity commented on the 2030-2031 addition of Ohio State in Thursday’s release from the school.
“We are committed to playing in as many big games as possible, keeping Georgia on the national stage,” Smart said. “Matchups with a team like Ohio State are one of the many reasons great players come to Georgia.”
McGarity said it’s in line with other home-and-home games recently announced.
“This is yet another opportunity to compete against the very best in college football,” McGarity said. “To have Ohio State Between the Hedges in 2030, and the return trip to the Horseshoe in 2031 – it will be another high-level matchup that will gain national attention.
“National home-and-home matchups in the future with Oklahoma, Clemson, UCLA, Florida State and Texas will provide our student-athletes and fans the best experiences in college football.”
McGarity told DawgNation he would consider buying out one of the weaker opponents if a home-and-home with a suitable Power 5 team could be arranged in the next six years.
