ATHENS — On a day when starting left tackle Isaiah Wynn was absent, Georgia mixed up its offensive line at practice, giving freshman Andrew Thomas some first-team snaps.
But those snaps came at left guard, rather than at one of the two tackle positions. Thomas was recruited as a tackle, but on Monday, he worked in a three-man drill on the interior. Thomas practiced pulling from left guard with starter Lamont Gaillard at center and Solomon Kindley at right guard.
Wynn was not seen during the media viewing period of practice. There has been no word about an injury for the team’s starting left tackle.
Thomas did not come to campus with as much hype as fellow freshman Isaiah Wilson, but Thomas has earned praise for his work ethic this summer from head coach Kirby Smart.
Pat Allen, who has been the team’s first-team left guard, appeared to be working at right tackle during the drill. So were Wilson and redshirt freshman Ben Cleveland.
Dyshon Sims, the senior who began preseason as the first-team right tackle, was on the other side at left tackle in Wynn’s absence.
The requisite caveat: This happened during the media’s opportunity to view two periods, and there just could have been some experimentation with Wynn absent. Of course, it also was the start of the second week of camp, when offensive line coach Sam Pittman will get a harder look at his options.
Some injury and other notes from the media viewing period:
- Freshman WR J.J. Holloman, who sat out Saturday’s practice, was not seen during the media viewing period.
- Sophomore WR Tyler Simmons, who injured his left wrist on Saturday, practiced Monday with a wrap around the writst.
- Sophomore TE Isaac Nauta, who cramped up during the practice on Saturday, also practiced Monday and looked fine.
- Sophomore DL Michail Carter, who did not participate in a scrimmage on Saturday, sat out Monday, though he was in uniform and observing drills.
- Cornerback Tyrique McGhee was back with the nickelback candidates during a slot vs. star drill on Monday. McGhee was joined by freshman Deangelo Gibbs, senior Aaron Davis and walk-on senior Tim Hill.
