ATHENS — The surest sign it’s the week that a major-conference team faces a lower-tier team: The coaches are extra angry at practice.
Lest their players take it easy this week, Georgia coaches took their lungs up a notch on Tuesday, at least during the media viewing period.
“Y’all could be a pretty good line if you just worked!” offensive line coach Sam Pittman shouted at his group.
Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney was on the opposite end of the media yet could still be heard very clearly. He yelled “hurry up” in almost blood-curdling fashion at freshman receiver Tyler Simmons, who Chaney wanted to trade lines so the receiver groups were even during a passing drill.
Defensive line coach Tracy Rocker helpfully instructed one of his players that he had a “fat” posterior end. He used another term for posterior end.
Georgia is favored by 50-plus points over Nicholls State this week.
Some other notes from the media viewing period:
- No easily discernable order at quarterback. If you go by a footwork drill, it went Greyson Lambert, Jacob Eason and then Brice Ramsey. (Lambert, incidentally, was back in his customary No. 11 jersey, after going with No. 19 on Monday for some reason.)
- Sony Michel is still in a black non-contact jersey.
- Freshman receiver Riley Ridley was in a regular jersey. He was limited in Monday’s practice with a sprained ankle.
- Pat Allen, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, was missing practice with an unknown injury. Allen, who has been working second and third team, was in uniform in a black jersey but not participating.
- Freshman tailback Elijah Holyfield continues to practice with wrapping on his right ankle. He did not play against North Carolina despite having gone in practice the previous week.
- No change in the first team in the secondary, where Maurice Smith was working first team at the star, with Rico McGraw going second team. While McGraw went first team basically all of the preseason, the staff switched Smith to starter two days before the game.
