Georgia spring game 2018: Preview

Last year was mostly a dream season for Georgia and coach Kirby Smart, as the Bulldogs won the SEC Championship and played for a national title, though the Bulldogs came up just short against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the title game.

Now the Bulldogs will look to reload, rather than rebuild. The Bulldogs have to replace a number of key players on the defensive side of the ball, specifically star linebacker Roquan Smith.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs will be without Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, but the Bulldogs have a number of talented replacements already on hand, including D’Andre Swift.

Of course most Georgia fans will be interested to see how the freshman Fields plays. A year ago, Jake Fromm had a strong spring game, but at the time no one could’ve guessed that it would’ve been him that would lead Georgia to the top of the SEC.

As for how Fields has fared so far in Georgia’s spring practices, there have been the expected ups and downs.

“He’s hitting a little bit of a wall,” Smart said earlier in the spring. “I think with all the installation, he’s coming in and meeting extra, doing all the things we expect of him. But it’s a lot.”

Fromm met with the media on Thursday and added that he is helping prep Fields in a similar fashion to Jacob Eason prepped Fromm a year ago. Eason transferred to Washington following the completion of the season.

“The same way Jacob was to me, I try to be that way with Justin,” Fromm said. “At the end of the day we learn a lot from each other. It’s a lot of mental reps on each other’s end.”

Many fans will also be excited to see how Fromm has improved in the offseason. While his freshman season as a whole was stellar, it did end on a sour note in the national championship game.

“Trying to get better in the pocket, try to have an even more clearness of the offense and to have better rhythm on my throws,” Fromm said on what improvements he’s tried to make. “Obviously, doing a better job throwing on the run. I’m just trying to take all that in and improve as much as I can.”

Georgia’s spring game is one of 5 that will be played on April 21. The Georgia game will be broadcast on ESPN and will follow the Alabama spring game.
