ATHENS — Georgia football Scrimmage 3 provided some highlights that had Bulldogs’ onlookers excited, with playmakers old and new having their moments.
The biggest takeaways, from those in attendance, was no dropped passes in the receiving corps and great competition at all positions.
Redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis got the most repetitions with the first team at quarterback, though Coach Kirby Smart told those assembled the job is by no means settled.
Carson Beck showed off his impressive quarterbacking skills, as well, according to the onlookers. JT Daniels also got work in the Pro Style offense.
Freshman receiver Jermaine Burton was the most eye-opening player and the lead candidate for MVP honors with his catches and punt return abilities.

Junior receiver Matt Landers had some impressive moments, too, as Todd Monken’s offense took on a controlled, efficient look.
Tailback James Cook appeared every bit the multi-faceted threat many expect him to be.
Freshman running back Daijun Edwards had a moment himself, doing his best Clyde Edwards-Helaire impression by finishing a run with an impressive shoulder into a defender.
Many noticed Zamir White looking good in the open field, showing the sort of quickness and cutting ability needed to excel in the offense.
Reports of outside linebackers Nolan Smith and Jermaine Johnson standing out on defense came as no surprise, and some onlookers noted safety Lewis Cine has impressive closing speed.

True freshman cornerback Jalen Kimber had a Pick-6, and senior safety Richard LeCounte also had an interception.
The offensive line set up very much like Smart indicated in fall camp with Jamaree Salyer at left tackle, Justin Shaffer at left guard, Trey Hill at center, Ben Cleveland at right guard and Owen Condon at right tackle.
Hill also took some snaps at right guard, with Warren Ericson taking some snaps at center.
Many in attendance also said they were impressed with freshman kicker Jared Zirkel’s leg strength and accuracy.
Smart did not make any public post-scrimmage comments on Saturday, but he told the onlookers that Monty Rice was excused from the scrimmage because of family funeral.
