Georgia suffered a bad loss, 20-17, in double overtime against South Carolina on Saturday. To call it a bad loss is honestly an understatement.

The Bulldogs fell to a team with a losing record, at home, who was playing a third-string quarterback for most of the second half.

This was easily Georgia’s worst performance of the Kirby Smart era. It snapped a 15-game winning streak against SEC East opponents and a 16-game home winning streak.

Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm also probably played his worst game while with the Bulldogs. Fromm finished 28 of 51 for 295 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions, one of which he threw off a wide receiver’s hands in overtime. He also lost a fumble.

Georgia’s other Mr. Reliable, kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, was also off. He missed a 42-yard game-tying field goal at the end of double overtime and also had a field-goal try blocked at the end of the first half.

The Bulldogs were on the edge of field-goal position late in the second half, but they tried to run one more play to move a little bit closer for Blankenship. But with three seconds left, Georgia committed an illegal-shift penalty, which knocked the team just out of field-goal range.

This was also the first truly big upset of the college football season, and it will give the College Football Playoff picture a major shakeup. Georgia isn’t out of the playoff race, but the Bulldogs will have to win-out, beating the likes of Florida, Auburn, Texas A&M and likely either Alabama or LSU in the SEC Championship, to have a shot at the Final Four.
