ATHENS — Georgia coach Kirby Smart met with the media following the Bulldogs first scrimmage of the fall session on Saturday.
It was a long, hot day by all counts, with a temperature of 93 degrees and a heat index of 106 at Sanford Stadium, which was par for the course according to former UGA quarterback Jake Fromm.
“Scrimmages are always a big deal,” Fromm said earlier this week on DawgNation Daily.
“There’s a lot of give and take and ebbs and flows, and they are long.”
But as Fromm would know as a three-year starter, they are also productive.
“It’s a great place to see guys play in the stadium in front of a crowd,” Fromm said, referring to the boosters who are often allowed in. “You get a mindset of who you can trust.”
Kirby Smart updates
• Smart said the Bulldogs also had some scrimmage action on Friday
• “We got to identify some guys who are ready to play and some guys who want no part of it. I was glad we got the conditions we got... I got to see guys push through, and guys who couldn’t.”
• “I know you will ask about the quarterbacks -- I can’t tell you anything until I watch the tape, but the people around them have to play better.”
• “I felt like the One offense won the third down challenge, red area was a tossup, two-minute, the offense won”
• “I don’t think any of those quarterbacks will tell you they played their best game. We need each one of them to get better.”
• “Today’s goal was to find out who’s got some toughness and who could push through.”
• “We have an extremely long way to go as a football team.”
• “This team, I asked them after the scrimmage and after we ran, ‘what have you done to deserve anything you’ve gotten. They’ve done nothing.”
• “We may play four of five, or five of five games, in what is tough heat, and I kind of hope we do because I want to see where we are as a team.”
• “I didn’t see a group where I was like, ‘ooh man, they are dominant.’ "
Injury update
• Smart said freshman inside linebacker Raylen Wilson has a hyperextended knee, the extent of which is under observation.
“As of now I’d reserve judgement, hopefully he’ll be fine,” Smart said. “I don’t know how long it will be but we don’t think it’s ligament damage.”
• Smart said Kendall Milton (hamstring) was held out as was Branson Robinson (hamstring). Smart explained Milton is the more limited of the two, while Robinson has been going through individual drills but is not yet cleared for full contact.
• Smart said cornerback Kamari Lassiter (foot sprain) did not scrimmage, and inside linebacker Smael Mondon (foot) remains out as expected.
