Georgia football-Vanderbilt football preview
1. Which quarterback do we see?
Georgia saw both Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason play in the blowout win against Tennessee. Fromm got the start and threw for just 84 yards in the game and was intercepted once. He also threw for a touchdown and ran for two more. For Eason, it was his first game aciton since first getting injured in the Appalachian State game.
Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason thinks he has an idea as to who will play but Kirby Smart refuted Mason’s claim.
“Derek Mason’s entitled to his opinion,” Smart said. “Derek Mason’s not at our practices. He doesn’t watch our practice tape, that I know of. So I’m not really concerned with those comments.”
In Eason’s absence, Fromm has thrown just two interceptions comapred to 8 touchdowns. Eason started all but one game in his freshman year. Smart did not name a starter prior to the start of the game, though Jake Fromm did take most of the first team reps during the media viewing period at practice.
2. Does the Georgia defense allow a touchdown ?
In the first two SEC games of the year, the Georgia defense has allowed just 3 points total. Only Alabama can say that they’ve equaled Georgia’s defensive prowess. The Bulldogs are both forcing turnovers and getting after the quarterback. Georgia racked up 3.0 sacks, 8.0 tackles for loss and 2 interceptions against the Volunteers. And given that Vanderbilt had fewer than 100 yards of offense against Alabama, it should be another dominant day for the Bulldogs.
“I would argue that Erk Russell would say they are playing ‘Junkyard Dawg’-like, and that means a lot more pride to me being a Georgia alum,” Smart said of his defense. “It’s the fact that our kids are playing hard and playing to a standard that was created a long time ago around here, really flying to the ball, hitting people.”
If Georgia can shut down Vanderbilt in a similar fashion that Alabama did, it might be time to take those Alabama comparisons seriously.
3. Can Georgia get revenge on Vanderbilt.
One of Georgia’s most shocking losses from last year came when the Commodores upset Georgia in Sanford Stadium. Zach Cunningham had a monster game for Vanderbilt, and the Commodores stuffed Georgia on a 4th and 1. The Bulldogs would love nothing more than to return the favor this year in Vanderbilt’s stadium.
The Bulldogs and Commodores kickoff at 12 pm ET. ESPN will air the game.
