Shyheim Carter, a 4-star cornerback from Louisiana, announced via Twitter that he’s de-committed from Alabama.

Carter, who’s ranked as the country’s No. 5 cornerback, is a year removed from pledging to the Crimson Tide. He currently holds offers from 10 programs, most notably UGA. Carter was in attendance for UGA’s “Dawg Night” prospect camp back in July, and it’s worth noting his shared connection with UGA personnel director Sam Petitto.

Petitto has strong ties across Louisiana, specifically at Kentwood High School, where Carter currently attends. Petitto coached at Kentwood for one season and helped the team reach a state championship.

Back in July, Carter spent two days at Georgia. The 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback opened up to 247Sports’ Kipp Adams about the trip and his affinity for Petitto.

“That was nice,” Carter said in the interview. “I got to hang out with Sam Petitto, and I love that dude. I hung out with a bunch of players as well as the rest of the coaching staff. It was just nice.”

Last year, UGA managed to flip 4-star defensive back Rico McGraw from Alabama. Could UGA be primed to flip another in 2016? 

“I plan on being an early enrollee, so I will make my decision really soon,” Carter told Adams. “Sooner than what people think. Georgia has a high chance to get me.”
