ATHENS — Kirby Smart has confirmed where his position coaches would be this season, and there were no surprises.
Glenn Schumann, who was at Alabama with Smart as a defensive analyst, will take over the inside linebackers.
Kevin Sherrer will remain Georgia’s outside linebackers coach. Tracy Rocker will remain the defensive line coach.
And Mel Tucker, named the defensive coordinator on Tuesday, will coach the secondary as well.
Smart said he’ll also work with the inside linebackers on occasion. He indicated that Schumann and Sherrer will work in tandem with the linebackers, calling it “a work in progress.”
“There’ll be times they meet together,” Smart said. “There will also be times that I’ll be very involved defensivvely.”
Tucker has been a secondary coach throughout his career, including at Alabama last year and prior to that in the NFL.
This will be Schumann’s first on-field coaching job. Smart has referred to him as sort of his “right-hand man” the last half-dozen years at Alabama.
Sherrer has been coaching Georgia’s outside linebackers and nickel backs (otherwise known as stars) the past two years. He shifted over to coaching the inside linebackers last month during bowl practice, when he also served as defensive coordinator in Georgia’s 24-17 victory over Penn State.
Rocker has been a defensive line coach throughout his career. He and Sherrer were the only two assistants who will remain from Mark Richt’s staff.
Smart himself has coached at several spots throughout his career. He coached the inside linebackers at Alabama this year, has also coached the outside linebackers and secondary, and even was Georgia’s running backs coach in 2005.
