NASHVILLE, Tenn. — As expected, Georgia inside linebacker Natrez Patrick is being held out of Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt following his arrest for marijuana possession late Thursday night.

Reggie Carter, the team’s top reserve inside linebacker, is also non the travel roster. Carter missed practices this week with an undisclosed injury. So Georgia will be down to Roquan Smith and then a host of reserves, including Juwan Taylor, Monty Rice and Nate McBride.

UGA’s student-athlete handbook calls for an immediate suspension for a marijuana arrest. This was Patrick’s second marijuana arrest, following one his freshman year in 2015, and a second violation calls for a four-game suspension.

If that holds, Patrick would also be suspended next week against Missouri, the Florida game and a home game against South Carolina. He would be eligible to return for the Nov. 11 game at Auburn.

There was also a situation last year after UGA police were called to Patrick’s room following a report of marijuana odor. But Patrick was not charged or suspended.

Patrick started Georgia’s first five games at inside linebacker, and is tied for third on the team with 17 tackles. He also started nine games last year and two his freshman year.

There has been no immediate reaction from the team on the Patrick arrest, which came at 11:37 p.m. on Thursday night. He was charged with two misdemeanors by Athens-Clarke County police, including possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. A team spokesman did not return a request for comment.

Head coach Kirby Smart is expected to address the situation after Saturday’s game.
