ATHENS — “If it was today, my feeling is we’d play more than one guy.”

That was Georgia coach Mark Richt’s latest take on the Bulldogs’ quarterback competition, which reached a crescendo Thursday in the final scrimmage of the preseason.

Richt revealed that Brice Ramsey and Greyson Lambert each played one quarter of the two-quarter scrimmage with the No. 1 offense, while Faton Bauta played a quarter and a half with the No. 2 unit on Thursday. The first string represented “Georgia” while the second and third units combined to play as “Louisiana-Monroe.” For the record, the faux Warhawks were spotted a 24-0 “halftime” lead and actually won the game 31-24.

But Richt insisted nothing should be read into Ramsey and Lambert working with the ones while Bauta went with the twos.

“No. Everybody’s getting evaluated,” he said, repeating a phrase he used the day before. “The twos have gotten to the point where they function pretty good. The twos against the 1 defense had success. They moved them. They did legitimately score a touchdown. They had a long touchdown drive with Faton leading it. There was a lot of good evaluation on Faton as well.”

This was the third and final scrimmage of the preseason. Like the others, it was closed to media or public viewing. And, once again, Richt declined to share any statistics compiled during the 90-minute exercise.

He did allow that tailback Sony Michel had a touchdown run of “more than 50 yards” for the No. 1 offense. He also said there was a critical turnover that derailed the Bulldogs’ comeback efforts. But he would say only that it was a fumble and not by whom.

At least one of the “Georgia” scores was a Dominick Sanders interception return for a touchdown and the No. 1 offense recorded just one touchdown pass, though Richt would not say which quarterback threw it or who caught it. He said the No. 1 offense had “a couple of opportunities” to tie the game at the end but could not.

Only two players were made available for interviews afterward and they didn’t have much to add about the quarterbacks’ play.

“I don’t know; I don’t really worry about it too much,” fourth-string tailback Brendan Douglas said. “I’m just out there playing. I’m sure whoever we pick will be fine. Leave that up to Coach Richt.”

Said senior linebacker Jake Ganus: “I’m not allowed to comment on the quarterbacks. Once a starter’s named, I’ll tell you everything about him.”

All indications are that the Bulldogs are going to carry a quarterback rotation at least into the first game and possibly beyond.

“We’ll watch what happened today, and then I think we’ll have to look at the total body of work from the beginning of camp and probably put a little more weight on what’s happened as of late,” Richt said. “And then we’ll try to decide if it’s time to nail it down or just keep going. I think that’s going to be the decision.

“I don’t think we’re set to say 100 percent we’re going to name a starter after this thing. … My gut is we’ll keep going in some way, shape or form. It may keep roll into the game. There may be more than one guy playing. If it was today, my feeling would be we’d play more than one guy.”
