LEESBURG, Ga. — Georgia coach Kirby Smart hinted on his Thursday call-in show earlier this season that he might check on a key recruit or two on a Friday night this season if the opportunity presented itself.

That opportunity came Friday night in wind-whipped South Georgia.

Smart was on the sidelines to see Class AAAAAA No. 1 Houston County go on the road to face third-ranked Lee County. Both teams are unbeaten so far in 2016,

Give Smart credit for taking advantage of the postponement of the South Carolina game to Sunday afternoon. He found a way to use that to his advantage.

He was there to see 2017 4-star QB commit Jake Fromm face off against Lee County’s 4-star DT Aubrey Solomon.

That was even without the benefit of the “Kirby Copter” he made famous during the stretch run for the 2016 recruiting class last January.

Fromm is rated as the nation’s No. 4 pro-style QB prospect for 2017. He’s on a pace to smash every major passing record in Georgia prep football history and will challenge 5-star freshman Jacob Eason when he arrives in Athens.

Solomon is rated as the nation’s No. 5 defensive tackle prospect in this year’s signing class. He was once committed to Michigan but backed off that pledge.

DawgNation projects Solomon to be the most important remaining uncommitted target for the Bulldogs in the Class of 2017.

The 6-foot-3, 305-pounder is rated as the nation’s No. 77 overall prospect for 2017. Fromm checks in at No. 49 in the country in 2017.

The Houston County students broke out in a “Kirby” chant when they noticed Smart taking pictures with fans on the sideline.
