ATHENS — Kirby Smart told ESPN’s Chris Low on Monday that defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter would be suspended at least two games, and hinted it could be more.

That’s not really new. Smart said as much last week, and it’s been clear since Ledbetter’s arrest two weeks ago that he would be suspended a minimum of two games.

That’s because of UGA policy, which mandates a two-game suspension for a DUI offense. It’s not really up to Smart, quite frankly, unless there are mitigating circumstances and an appeal. But Smart confirmed last week that Ledbetter would be suspended, so the baseline became a two-game suspension.

Now the only question is whether it will be more games. Smart declined to announce a number last week, but remember that back when Ledbetter was arrested the first time Smart confirmed that – again because of UGA official policy – Ledbetter would receive a one-game suspension. Then Smart hedged after the initial charge was dismissed because the district attorney said he couldn’t make it stick in court.

We’re also still awaiting word on if and how many games cornerback Juwuan Briscoe and defensive lineman Julian Rochester will be suspended. Smart is playing a bit coy on Briscoe, who had a misdemeanor arrest for driving without a license, which does not require a suspension under UGA policy. As for Rochester, his felony arrest for the BB gun incident in the dorm is still hanging in the court process, so until that’s cleared up Smart may not be able to decide or announce anything.
