Georgia signed the nation’s No. 1 overall player in the 2019 football class in Nolan Smith. And it may have the opportunity to sign an equally talented player in basketball with Anthony Edwards.
Edwards, a 6-foot-5 combo guard from Atlanta, is set to announce his decision on Monday. Georgia is one of the finalists as is Kentucky. But for a while many thought that Florida State was the front-runner for Edwards’ services. But that no longer appears to be the case, as Edwards has reportedly canceled his visit to Florida State according to a report from WCTV News in Florida.
Edwards is the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2019 class and the nation’s No. 1 guard. He was originally a member of the 2020 class but reclassified to join the 2019 cycle. Georgia and Kentucky are the only schools to get official visits from Edwards, as he has decided against visiting North Carolina and Kansas.
If the Bulldogs do land Edwards on Monday morning, he would be the highest rated recruit that Georgia has ever landed. Edwards will announce his decision live on Monday morning from his school in Atlanta. The Bulldogs are in the first year under coach Tom Crean, and should Georgia land the standout from Holy Spirit Preparatory School it would be a huge win for the Bulldogs.

Landing Edwards doesn’t guarantee that the Bulldogs will make the NCAA Tournament next year — Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz both missed the NCAA Tournament despite being pegged as generational talents — but it would no doubt improve the pedigree of Georgia. And he’d provide a huge boost as a guard, given that the Bulldogs’ guard play has not been great so far in Crean’s first season. Georgia is set to bring back forwards Nicholas Claxton and Rayshaun Hammonds, who have been bright spots on this year’s team.
Georgia has only ever landed one 5-star recruit who went on to play for the Bulldogs, as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope signed with Georgia in 2011. He was a first round draft pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
The Bulldogs host Ole Miss on Saturday and will be looking to end a three-game losing streak.
