Georgia enters the game with a 7-4 record. The Bulldogs are coming off a road win over rival Georgia Tech back on Dec. 22. UMass enters with a 7-5 record. The Minutemen are coming off an 85-84 win over Fairleigh Dickerson on Dec. 21.

Georgia Basketball-UMass preview

This will be Georgia’s first game since taking on Georgia Tech on Dec. 22. In that game, the Bulldogs were able to grind out a 70-59 win. The win gave Georgia a four-game winning streak over the Yellow Jackets. Seniors, such as starting point guard Turtle Jackson and starting center Derek Ogbeide,  will end their Georgia career’s with a perfect record against the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia is led by two standout sophomores, as the team’s leading scorer is Rayshaun Hammonds, who averages 14.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. The Bulldogs’ leading rebounder is Nicolas Claxton, who is scoring 12.8 points per game and bringing in 10.1 rebounds. Claxton is also leading the team in blocks, with 3.1 per game.

Tom Crean is in his first year as coach for the Bulldogs. He has previous stops include Indiana and Marquette. UMass is led by Matt McCall, who is in his second season at the school.

UMass is led by junior guard Luwane Pipkins, who leads the Minutemen with 19.4 points per game. Pipkins scored 17 points against Georgia in last year’s 72-62 win for UMass. Last year’s meeting was the first meeting in series history between the two programs.

After taking on UMass, Georgia will begin SEC play. The Bulldogs travel to No. 3 ranked Tennessee on Jan. 5.
