The final three for speed demon cornerback Julian Humphrey is now down to one. Humphrey, a one-time Florida commitment, is now the 22nd member of the 2022 recruiting class in Athens.
“I wanted to go to a school that can develop me as a student-athlete, develop me and get me to the next level,” Humphrey said.
He didn’t even put on the hat for the reveal. When it was time to announce his choice, he motioned off camera for a Bulldog to be brought to the table.
The first thing that the viewers watching heard was the “Awwww” that came from one of his family members at the table.
Humphrey actually added a Florida hat to the table for his announcement reveal ceremony Friday afternoon from Texas.
It caps a series of events in which the Bulldogs were able to pry away the commitment of a young man who had a sizable Florida banner hanging in his room less than three weeks ago.
Let’s just tick off the ways for DawgNation to appreciate the arrival of the third native Texan to their 2022 recruiting class:
- Humphrey’s decision adds the nation’s No. 12 CB prospect and No. 94 overall prospect to the board from the 247Sports Composite scale
- He’s one of the fastest players in the nation with a 4.38 laser time in the 40 and a 10.55 in the 100 meters. He will pair that with another highly-explosive trait in a 41-inch vertical leap.
- The decision now gives Georgia a tally of nine commitments for this class among the nation’s top 100 prospects for 2022, including a robust six future Bulldogs to add to the defense
- As one might expect, the non-binding verbal commitment Humphrey just made via a live stream on CBS Sports and his Instagram account once again vaults Georgia past Alabama into the top overall spots for this cycle on the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
- If that wasn’t enough to appreciate with this move, the Bulldogs have taken a recruit that was once was of the anchor recruits from Florida’s 2022 class and made them a Bulldog.
It appears that things in Humphrey’s world do tend to move quickly. The Bulldogs quickly began prioritizing him this fall and he made the public move to decommit from Florida’s class on October 25.
That came after he got the chance to visit UGA over the summer and then to take his official visit to UGA for the Arkansas game on Oct. 2.
Julian Humphrey: What the Bulldogs landed here with this big commit
Humphrey hails from an extended family of athletes. It is the same Humphrey family tree that sent Bobby Humphrey off to Alabama approximately 30-years ago. Humphrey then went and sustained a fine career in the NFL. His son, Marlon, was an All-American and a first-round draft pick out of Alabama, too.
He is now a Pro Bowl cornerback in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens. Julian compares his game to that of both Humphrey and Cleveland’s Denzel Ward at the NFL level.
Julian’s father, John Humphrey Sr., was a Houston-area high school legend who went on to a college career in NCAA Division II football. The new Bulldog commit can also point to two older brothers for his preparation and readiness to play Power 5 football.
John Humphrey Jr. was a 3-star recruit in the 2015 cycle that initially signed with Oklahoma before transferring to Arizona State and finishing off his career as a graduate transfer at Nevada. Jordan Humphrey was a 2-star prospect in the 2018 cycle that also signed with Arizona.
What makes the youngest brother unique? Well, for starters he is significantly bigger than his older brothers at the same stage of their careers. He’s also been motivated by their example.
“He just has a naturally competitive nature to challenge the guy that is ahead of him or the guy that is older or maybe even better than him when he was younger,” Clear Lake assistant coach Rocky Granville said. “To me, he has basically always been that way.”
He just likes a challenge. The bigger, the better.
“If a guy is 20 yards ahead of him on the field, he wants to catch him,” Granville said. “To catch him before he reaches the end zone. Then there are also those free plays on offense. When a penalty happens and an offense gets a free play, that’s when he dials in. He’s like ‘Nah, they are not going to get a free play’ and ‘I’m going to get an interception right here and take away their free play’ and he’s gotten like five or six pass breakups this year when they just throw it up.”
“To him, he just doesn’t see that as an offense’s free play. He will say ‘That is my play’ when they just throw it up on their free plays. He sees those things as like challenges. Somebody is trying to challenge him and he likes that challenge. Some people around our area see that as arrogance, but it is more about him having complete confidence in his ability.”
He’s the guy that will yell at the opposing sideline or before the game for the other staff to try him on deep routes. Humphrey doesn’t want to be covered up with schemes or zones. He never did as a young cornerback.
Humphrey relished the chance to be on that island himself with that receiver he was asked to lock up and shut down. He loves to press and play man and play the third deep of the field.
That is what Granville feels separates him from all the other top-shelf defensive backs he has coached.
“He just enjoys playing and he enjoys competing,” Granville said. “Folks will wonder if he is a cocky kid and I will just say that he is not. He’s just a kid who likes to compete. It is fun for him.”
When you meet him, there is no malice. Granville said he’s not a cocky or an angry kid.
“He’s just a fun-spirited kid that loves a challenge,” Granville said. “That’s made him who he is. He has taken those challenges on and never ran from them. That’s made him the player that he is today.”
How would he characterize his blistering speed?
“He’s as fast as he wants or needs to be,” Granville said. “That’s about the best way I can describe it. He definitely has a second gear type speed. He just flashes that great speed in and out in everything he does.”
