ATHENS — Lost in all the hoopla of Georgia’s football recruiting class was the fact that the Bulldogs’ soccer team landed a few blue-chippers as well.
Second-year UGA coach Billy Lesesne welcomed four new additions into the fold this week: Goalkeeper Jessie Harvey, defender Erin Ratchick, forward Katie MacGinnitie and midfielder Daria Stan.
“We’re very excited about this group,” Lesesne said in a UGA news release. “They are hard-working and a talented group that have the right priorities in order. I think they are going to work hard and raise the level of our team.”
Three of the four signees hail from Georgia. MacGinnitie, of Atlanta, and Ratchick, of Marietta, both played their high school and club soccer in the Atlanta area. Daria Stan, who is Romanian, comes from Augusta, but played part of her club career on Atlanta’s Tophat teams. The Bulldog’s lone out-of-state commit is Harvey, who comes from Franklin.
Georgia lost six seniors to graduation this year, including Bella Hartley and Emma Sonnett, who played over 1,000 minutes of action apiece last season.
The Bulldogs, who were 5-12 last season (4-7 SEC) return 13 players who started multiple games, including All-SEC performers Caroline Water and Sydney Shultis and leading goal-scorer Marion Crowder.
UGA kicks off the 2016 spring season on March 1 with a 7 p.m. match at Georgia State.
